HISTORY OF KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA TECHNICAL EDUCATION & VOCATIONAL TRAINING AUTHORITY

In 2002, Directorate of Technical Education and Manpower Training were merged to form the Directorate General of Technical Education & Manpower Training.

Operating under the administrative control of provincial secretary for Industries, Commerce and Technical Education, the Directorate General is comprised of seven Deputy Directors: one each for Administration, Planning and Development (P&D), Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E), Trade Testing Board (TTB), Trainings, Research and Development (R&D) and FATA besides six Assistant Directors, a Research Officer and Employment Exchange managers.

The Directorate General runs a network of various institutions which includes Government Colleges of Technology (GCTs), Government Polytechnic Institutes (GPIs), Government Technical and Vocational Centers (GTVCs) and Government Colleges of Commerce and Management Sciences (GCMSS).

In retrospect, till May 1986 the Directorate of Manpower and Training was a component of the Directorate of Labour Welfare. Nevertheless, in June 1986 a Separate Directorate of Manpower and Training was established.

Likewise, on July 01, 2001 the Directorate of Technical Education N-WFP was shifted to the administrative control of Department of Industries, as its attached department, from Department of Education. Finally, on February 09, 2002 both the directorates — Directorate of Technical Education and Directorate of Manpower Training—merged together to form the Directorate General of Technical Education & Manpower Training.

Apart from Technical Teachers Training College and Government Advance Technical Training Centre, 90 different institutions function under the Directorate of Technical Education, focusing on imparting education in commerce, Technical Education And Vocational Trainings trades at different levels.

Another important segment of this Department is Apprenticeship Training Wing promulgated under Apprenticeship Ordinance 1962 whereby an employer undertakes to employ a person and to train him or have him trained systematically in an apprentice-able trade for a period the duration of which is to be fixed in advance and in the course of which the apprentice is bound to work in the employer’s service. This particular training programme is 100 per cent practical-oriented and is being successfully running.

The merged Directorate General has the following streams of education and training:

1 Tech Level Engineering Education

2 Colleges of Technology & Polytechnic Institutes (DAE)

3 Skill Development & Vocational Training

4 Technical and Vocational Centers.

5 Shaheen Vocational Training Institutes, SVTIs

After the approval of KP-TEVTA Act in 11th March, 2015 today this Department is called KP-TEVTA ( Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Technical Education & Vocational Training Authority )

Youth engagement in demand driven skillful training in sync with the market based technology for improved employ-ability and meaningful contribution to the socioeconomic development of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

OBJECTIVES KP-TEVTA

The overall objective of the Technical Education and Vocational Training policy is to provide the economy with qualified and competitive workers and to train citizens able to participate in sustainable growth and poverty reduction by ensuring training opportunities to all social groups without discrimination. The main objectives of National Skill Strategy are:
